What homeowners often miss
More insulation is not always the first thing an uncomfortable attic needs.
Insulation resists heat flow, but it does not by itself stop uncontrolled air movement, correct moisture intrusion, or preserve ventilation paths. Those systems have to work together for the insulation to perform as intended.
The goal is not the greatest possible amount of insulation. It is a dry, well-sealed, appropriately insulated attic with the intended airflow preserved.
R-value depends on real installation conditions
Coverage matters as much as the label on the product. Gaps, compressed areas, displaced material, and wet insulation can reduce effectiveness. Before adding material, an inspection should establish what is present, whether it is evenly distributed, and whether any condition could undermine the upgrade.
Air sealing comes before simply adding depth
Openings around plumbing, wiring, attic hatches, and framing transitions can let conditioned air move into the attic. ENERGY STAR guidance recommends sealing attic air leaks before adding insulation so the new material is not being asked to solve a different problem.
Ventilation paths must remain open
In a vented attic, outside air typically enters at the soffits and exits higher on the roof. Insulation placed across those intake paths can block airflow. Baffles, vent condition, moisture clues, and the relationship between the attic and roof should be reviewed as one system.

- Insulation depth, coverage, and condition
- Accessible attic-floor air leaks
- Soffit vents, baffles, and exhaust paths
- Moisture and roof-leak evidence
- Attic hatch and accessible duct conditions
